Convert WebP images to JPG so older software will open them. Nothing is uploaded.

Why you keep ending up with WebP files

WebP is Google's image format, introduced in 2010 and now served by a large share of the web because it is roughly 25–30% smaller than an equivalent JPEG. Every current browser displays it, so when you right-click and save an image from a modern site, WebP is frequently what lands in your Downloads folder — even though you never chose it.

The problem appears downstream. Photoshop only added native WebP support in version 23.2 (2022). Many CMS media libraries, e-commerce product uploaders, print services, PowerPoint on older builds and a long tail of desktop applications still reject it. Converting to JPEG trades a little file size for compatibility that has been universal since the 1990s.

Watch out for transparency

WebP supports an alpha channel; JPEG does not. When a transparent WebP is converted here, transparent areas are flattened onto a white background — the standard behaviour, and usually what you want for a photo. If the transparency is load-bearing, for example a logo you need to place over a coloured background, convert to PNG instead, which keeps the alpha channel intact.

Animated WebP

WebP can also hold animation, like a GIF. JPEG cannot. If you convert an animated WebP here, you get the first frame as a still image. That is the only sensible mapping between the two formats, but it is worth knowing before you convert a batch and wonder where the motion went.

Common questions

Do my files get uploaded to a server?

No. Every tool on this site runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas and WebAssembly APIs. There is no upload endpoint in the page — you can confirm this yourself by opening your browser's Network tab while you convert a file. Nothing leaves the tab, which also means the tools keep working if you go offline after the page loads.

Will the JPG be bigger than the WebP?

Usually yes, by roughly 25–40% at matched visual quality. That is the compression advantage WebP was built to deliver. Lower the quality slider if file size matters more to you than fidelity.

What happens to transparent areas?

They become white, because JPEG has no way to store transparency. Use the WebP to PNG converter if you need to keep the alpha channel.

Can I convert an animated WebP?

You will get the first frame only. JPEG is a single-frame format, so there is no way to carry the animation across.
