When PNG is the right target, and when it is not
PNG stores pixels losslessly. Converting a HEIC to PNG decodes the photo once and writes every pixel out exactly as decoded, so no further compression artifacts are introduced. That matters if the file is about to go through an editing pipeline — retouching, compositing, upscaling — where each additional lossy save would compound visible damage.
The cost is size. PNG's compression is designed for flat colour and sharp edges, not photographic noise, so a 2 MB HEIC photograph commonly becomes a 12–20 MB PNG. For a screenshot or a graphic that happens to be stored as HEIC, PNG is an excellent fit. For an ordinary camera photo you are about to email or upload, HEIC to JPG is almost always the better choice.
The transparency question
PNG supports an alpha channel, but a photo taken by the iPhone camera has no transparency to preserve — every pixel is opaque. Converting to PNG does not create transparency; it only preserves it where it already exists. HEIC files exported from apps that support alpha (some sticker and cutout tools) will keep their transparent regions through this conversion, which is the one case where PNG is strictly required.

Common questions
Do my files get uploaded to a server?
No. Every tool on this site runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas and WebAssembly APIs. There is no upload endpoint in the page — you can confirm this yourself by opening your browser's Network tab while you convert a file. Nothing leaves the tab, which also means the tools keep working if you go offline after the page loads.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the HEIC?
Because PNG is lossless and HEIC is not. HEIC throws away detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which is how it reaches its small size. PNG keeps every pixel, and photographic detail does not compress well losslessly. A 5–10× size increase is normal and expected.
Does this preserve transparency?
Yes, where the source has it. Camera photos are fully opaque, so there is nothing to preserve. HEIC files exported with an alpha channel keep it in the PNG.
Can I convert HEIC to PNG on an iPhone?
Yes — this page works in Safari on iOS. Tap the drop area, choose Photo Library, and pick your images. The converted PNGs land in your Downloads via the Files app.
