The transparency-preserving direction

If the GIF has a transparent background — most logos, badges and icons saved as GIF do — this is the conversion you want. PNG carries a full 8-bit alpha channel, so the transparent areas stay transparent instead of being filled with white as they would be in a JPG.

Still only the first frame

PNG, like JPG, holds a single image. An animated GIF is reduced to its first frame. That is the correct outcome for the static GIFs that make up most of this traffic, and something to check on if the source was a real animation — the opening frame is frequently blank.

What improves, and what does not

The 256-colour palette limit disappears: the PNG is a full-colour image and nothing downstream will re-quantise it. But converting cannot recover colours the GIF never stored. A photograph that was saved as a GIF at some point already has banding baked in, and it will still be there afterwards. The conversion stops the loss from continuing; it does not undo it.

Hard-edged graphics — logos, line art, pixel art, screenshots of UI — come through exactly. Both formats are lossless for that kind of content, so this is a genuine format change with no image change at all.

Expect a larger file

PNG is usually bigger than the GIF it came from, sometimes several times over. GIF's palette is a compression strategy: storing 256 colours as one byte each is compact, and PNG stores full colour values. Since the point of this conversion is usually compatibility or transparency rather than size, that is normally an acceptable trade. If size matters, WebP keeps the transparency and is far smaller than either.

Nothing is uploaded

Decoding and re-encoding both happen in this tab, using your browser's own image support. No copy of the file is sent anywhere.

Common questions

Do my files get uploaded to a server?

No. Every tool on this site runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas and WebAssembly APIs. There is no upload endpoint in the page — you can confirm this yourself by opening your browser's Network tab while you convert a file. Nothing leaves the tab, which also means the tools keep working if you go offline after the page loads.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. GIF has a single transparent colour and PNG has a full alpha channel, so the transparent areas come through as transparent.

Why is the PNG larger than the GIF?

GIF limits itself to 256 colours and stores each pixel as one palette index. PNG stores full colour values, which takes more space even after compression.

Does the animation survive?

No. PNG holds one image, so only the first frame is converted. Animated PNG exists but is a different format that most tools still do not accept.
